Charity Walk

Folks, this is from Norman Abshear, who runs Atheists United of OC. Discuss and add feedback here! - md

Greetings All

Here is an interesting idea that I do want some feed back on and some volunteers. Who would be interested in doing a charity walk for March of Dimes. This is an opportunity to demonstrate publicly that Atheists also care about birth defects etc... Please email me with your thoughts and comments. Thanks Norman.

I think it's a worthwhile idea, but I don't really like the notion of an 'all atheist' march or anything like that... sounds a little flaming to me, like the doo-dah parade or something. What about sponsoring the March, but focusing less on the atheist piece, and more on the cause, inviting all groups in to participate. That way, atheists are seen as inclusive, not having any one particular agenda or being labeled as 'just another group', and the only real agenda would in fact be raising money for cancer... something everyone can get behind.

By the way, my response to this point is that some of the biggest philanthropists today are atheists... I believe Bill Gates and Warren Buffet both are (I've heard this... it probably needs to be validated)... or they might go by 'agnostic'. But the point is, many of society's largest contributors are in fact atheists... they may just not advertise it.
