Niko Shows off OCA

I received this from Niko last week, and wanted to wait to post it until we were done with Villa Park stuff. Good work!

For the past 13 months I've been invited to attend the Laguna Beach Interfaith Council meetings representing the non-church affiliated in Laguna Beach. At today’s meeting, by some coincidence, the South County Outreach Program was on the meeting agenda with Thomas Whaling and Megan Smith making presentations. When the subject of food collection came up, I interjected that just last week about 40 atheists collected 200 pounds of non-perishable food and considerable money for South County Outreach. Megan verified that Orange County Atheists were very generous to SCO. In closing I mentioned that even though we (atheists) may not go to church, we can still be generous and giving. I think, as they say in my native Nu Yawk, we done good today (at least with the Laguna Beach faithful).

How to fight "In God We Trust"

It was brought up at the April meeting that we should coordinate to fight the Bakersfield lady who is pushing all the city council's to put the nation's slogan up at all the city halls. Click "Continue reading..." to see how you can help and discuss planning and strategy.

We have two good ideas:
1) Send letters to the city council members in all the cities that haven't voted yet. A common response I've seen in the paper is councilmembers saying "we heard a lot of support for this, but not a lot against it, so I voted yes". We can easily change that simply by letting them know that some people don't agree with them.

2) Have a protest at the next vote. Though this probably won't change their votes, at the very least it will get into the news (and thus the general public) that there are people strongly against mixing government and religion. It's suggested that people dress nicely (business casual is good enough) and to act professionally. Those that are willing to speak at the council meeting (you can live anywhere) may make a difference, but if you can just show up to support the group that would be great too.

Villa Park (near anaheim) is the next city to vote. Their meeting is on:
Tuesday April 22nd at 6:30pm
17855 Santiago Blvd., Villa Park, CA 92861
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=17855+Santiago+Blvd.%2C+Villa+Park%2C+CA+92861&hl=en

If anyone has some writing skills, if you could post sample letters to city councilmembers then that would help us out a lot! Also anyone with ideas or experience at protests please offer some tips!

April Meeting

The Next Orange County Atheists meeting will take place Wednesday, April 9 at 7:30PM at the International House of Pancakes at 18542 MacArthur Blvd in Irvine, near John Wayne Airport.

Remember that we'll be collecting non-perishable food for South County Outreach, and Ed from SCO will be there to talk to us about some volunteer opportunities. Please bring canned foods or cash, if you'd like to donate. If you don't know what to bring, SCO can always use peanut butter and jelly -they are some of their most popular items. A list of other needed items are available here.

SCO provides food, clothing and transitional housing for people in need in Orange County, and it'd be great if we can give them a little help in the non-holiday season.
Villa Park Letter

Atheists!

This is a long email about an important topic. If you'd busy, read the bold parts. Thank you.

We had a fantastic April meeting, and we discussed the recent rash of church-state problems to hit Orange County - "In God We Trust" in city councils.

My blog at the Register has an index of stories on the topic at http://lav.freedomblogging.com/category/atheist/in-god-we-trust/ - in short, a woman in Bakersfield has been contacting city councils throughout the state in an effort to get them to display "In God We Trust" prominently in their city council chambers. Westminster was first, last July, and in the last eight weeks, 5 other cities (Westminster, Cypress, Mission Viejo, San Clemente, and Huntington Beach) have agreed to the display. Most have been passed without much fanfare, though there were more speakers against the display at Mission Viejo and HB's meetings.

Last week, Villa Park put the topic on their agenda, to be voted on Tuesday, April 22.

We've set up a space to discuss the issue on the OC Atheists website - http://www.ocatheists.com/archives/000056.shtml. Please chime in with your ideas, suggestions, and RSVPs. We're working with UCI's Atheists, Agnostics and Rationalists group to get the word out, and Anthony has set up a Facebook event page (http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=11862584149) for those of you who use that site. We'll also be contacting other likeminded groups in the area. We hope to have 30 or so people come out, total, on April 22 to Villa Park.

Please visit the site and leave your input - only one more notice will go out to this mailing list. We will, however, continue with more regular updates to the discussion mailing list.
To subscribe to the discussion mailing list, send a message with the word 'subscribe' in the message body to discussion-list-request@ocatheists.com if you're interested.

We need your help. Obviously, the council will do what the council does. But on discussing this at the meeting, many of us believe having a large presence of people at the meeting, with some address the board officially, will be beneficial. It may influence a member or two, and at the least, it will show other cities that there is opposition. It will also garner a fair deal of media attention.

On that topic, I won't officially participate in the protest, as it's a minor conflict of interest. Travis from OCA and Anthony from AAR are taking the lead, but I can be contacted with any questions. Travis sent out the email below, and it's also reprinted at the OC Atheists website. I hope all of you can make it. Please forward this email to anyone you know who may be interested.

Carpool With Your Fellow Atheists

Niko had the idea this week that we should start a carpooling option for group members, since it turns out many of us are coming from the same directions. Please use this space to offer a ride, request a ride, and discuss the plan in general. Atheists tend to be a bit more socially conscious than the general population, let's see what we can do.

OC Atheists Community Charity Project

Friends,

At our November meeting, several of us discussed the issue of doing some good for the community and finding a charity to support both for the holiday season and beyond. I know a lot of the group is interested in this kind of work, so we'd like to make it official.

Here's what I need from you...

1. List a charity or charities that you feel would be appropriate for OC Atheists to sponsor and support. Any type is fine, but we'd really prefer they don't have a religious element, for obvious reasons. Groups that need time (volunteers), money, or both are all acceptable.

2. Use this space to discuss what you'd like to do to support any and all charities we're backing - direct donations, fund raising, events, etc. Also list the pros and cons, so others here can discuss the issue.

3. After some good discussion, use this space to get a consensus.

Even if you've never been to a meeting before, help us decide here. I'd like to have some plan in action so we can get some actual work done before our December 12 meeting. Thanks for your time and support!
